Fantasia made an immediate impression on American Idol with her stylized, gospel-influenced sound and her unconventional diction. Fantasia’s version of "Proud Mary" in her audition made her an early favorite.
But she stole the show and hearts of millions when she performed her version of "Summertime." This heartfelt and emotional performance earned raves from the judges and landed her on the Emmy Awards 2004 list of greatest television moments.
After Idol Fantasia released her first single in June 2004 "I Believe" which she had performed on American Idol that won against Diana Digarmo. Finally her debut album "Free Yourself", was released November 2004. Her singles "Truth Is" & "Free Yourself", became huge R&B hits, along with "Baby Mama" . To date Free Yourself has sold over one million copies and is certified platinum.
She has played Aretha Franklin in an episode of the series American Dreams, singing "Respect". Been guest voiced on The Simpsons episode "A Star is Torn" She’s appeared as a headliner at several music festivals including the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival & Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica. In Fall 2005 Fantasia will be touring with Kayne West on the "Touch the Sky" tour. In the late summer of 2005, Fantasia collaborated with Lyfe Jennings on his single "Hypothetically Remix". But In September 2005, Fantasia published her memoir "Life is Not a Fairy Tale".
Then later Fantasia played herself in a Lifetime Television movie based on her autobiography "Life is not a Fairy Tale". The movie was watched by over 19 Million viewers on August 19, 2006. The was movie was directed by Debbie Allen. The movie has touch many people and young single mothers giving inspiration and hope.
In the summer of 2006 Fantasia fired all ties with American Idol and signed with Violator Management . On December 12, 2006, she released her new album self-titled "FANTASIA". The album is has production by Missy Elliott, Diane Warren, Tone Mason, who produced first single "Hood Boy ft Big Boi of Outkast", Swizz Beatz, Dre, and many more. Since the release of the album Fantasia has began a with Jamie Foxx.
She was featured on the United Negro College Fund’s "An Evening of Star" tribute to Aretha Franklin. And also will be on Aretha’s new album "A Woman Falling out of Love".
