Kelis files for divorce from Nas

After a spending 4 married years together, Kelis, who is 7-months pregnant, has filed for a divorce from her husband, famed hip-hop star Nasir Jones (aka Nas). The couple met back in 2002 at an MTV Music Video Awards afterparty, where Nas declared to Kelis that she was going to be his wife. She agreed, and the pair made it official in 2005.

According to usmagazine.com, a lawyer for the boricua "Milkshake" singer filed divorce papers Thursday afternoon citing verbal abuse and infidelity as causes for the split. "I can confirm that she filed for divorce," representatives for Kelis said in a statement, "We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time."

Kelis is due to give birth to the couple’s first child together, a son, in 2 months. Nas has a 15-year old daughter, Destiny, from a previous relationship.

Nas and Kelis were married in Atlanta on January 8, 2005. They originally met at a Diddy-hosted afterparty for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. According to Vibe.com, the latter has cited irreconcilable differences for the divorce. As a result, she’s asking for spousal and child support, along with joint custody of the former couple’s baby.
