Remy Ma Appeals Shooting Conviction

Monday 24 November 2008

Remy Ma is hoping to be home for the holidays. The rapstress’ lawyers have just filed an appeal in hope to overturn her assault and weapon possession conviction.

As previously reported, Remy was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the stomach following a money dispute after a party in New York City. Remy’s legal team contends the judge made countless mistakes during the trial.

”The trial court wrongly instructed the jury over defense objection, that if it found Makeda Barnes-Joseph was ‘truthful and accurate’ then her testamony under the law satisfies the proof beyound a reasonable doubt,” Rem’s lawyer wrote in the appeal documents. “Ms. Smith was unfairly prejudiced by the inclusion in the indictment of counts regarding the violent gang assault at the Player’s Club, as to which there was no evidence to her complicity, but which likely colored the jury’s consideration of the remaining counts.”
